MBR or root partition?
 

Hi, this is my first post here, i'm planning to install linux on my comp today. My setup is like this:

hdd1 80GB (windows is installed here)
hdd2 120GB (i'm planning to install lnux here)

during installation i get 3 choices:
1. install bootloader on first sector of drive (MBR)
2. install bootloader on first sector of root partition
3. install of floppy (this is out for me as i don't have a floppy drive
4. skip (of course not ^^:)

If i wanna dual boot both windows and linux, what choice shld i pick?


Also, if i buy a new hdd in the future, and remove the 80GB hdd from my system, will the computer still boot linux or will i have to reinstall the bootloader?

1. Is more comfortable, as you will be presented with a boot screen every time you turn the comp on.
2. Is more secure, as you don't edit your current mbr. This will need a floppy to boot the second hdd or you can choose to boot the second hdd in bios. Not very straghtforward, but can be done.

Do some research on "smart boot manager". Its a boot manager and can herp you big.

You will have to reinstall bootloader if you choose n.1.

Install it in the MBR

Yes if you remove the 80gig you need to reinstall GRUB, but its only a 30second job using the rescue mode.

Or set the bios to boot from the 120g and install GRUB in its MBR, this way the bootloader will work from the 120g without needing the 80g being present.
