Maximum number of directories under XFS
Hi Guys,
First post! I have already had look around and cannot find a definitive answer. What is the upper on the number of subdirectories any directory can hold under XFS. I know there is a limit of 32000 under Ext3, but I cannot find a figure for XFS. Any pointers would be appreciated. Cheers Trevor |
Sigh. I don't know either, but the data sheet is here: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/datasheet.pdf
and it goes on about performance not degrading with large numbers of files, but doesn't, as far as I can see, directly answer your question. |
Yes I saw that doc.
Did some more research and found 2 links, which while not giving anywhere near a definitive answer points to something significantly above 32K: http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2004-03/msg00085.html http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/ce...er/072129.html Gonna keep looking... |
Just an update for anyone interested.
I have been playing with a Buffalo Terastation and decided to create some sub-directories under a single directory. Thus far I have created 1.7 million sub-dirs, so it is pretty safe to assume that xfs will pretty much cover my needs :) |

Bah! I don't have that either, but I do have (or, more precisely, Wikpedia has) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_systems which seems to be just about anything else that you'd like to know.

XFS max sub-directories
I too was wondering this. I did not hit a hard limit but reached 16,395,845 --well beyond any abuse I could envision.
