Max Resolution - Wireless Driver - KDE Themes
 

How can I change the max screen res (now 800x600) and screen refresh rate (now 73 Hz)?? I don't have an xorg.conf file in /etc/x11. Windows reports that my monitor supports up to 1200x800 (it's a widescreen laptop) and a refresh rate of 60 Hz, but it hasn't burst into flames yet.

Also, how can I get it to recognize my wireless card? It's built into the laptop, it's not pcmcia. Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3b Mini PCI Adapter.

I *think* I need this http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ipw2100 but I'm very new to Linux and I'm not sure how to go about this.

The network hardware section doesn't show any hardware other than eth0, my ethernet card. How can I install this driver and get my card to even be recognized as "there".

One more annoyance for you: which desktop environment do these screenshots use? I'm pretty sure it's KDE, but I'm not sure. How do they get those widgety things also like the calendar and CPU temp?

You don't have an xorg.conf? What files appear in /etc/X11

The link you provide to screenshots only leads to a page that says "results 0 of 0". If it is KDE the "widgety things" is part of karamba or gkrellm. Karamba is mainly in KDE, but gkrellm can be used with any desktop environment.

I have no idea about freebsd so won't be able to help on the first one. For wireless ethernet card...go to IPW2100 website. You will need to install the firmware and driver to be able to use the card. Download the source package...unpack the file and read the README and INSTALL files that came with the source package. If you have specific questions...come here and post back and anybody will help you.

As for the wireless... is it safe to upgrade my firmware, and will it affect the way it works in Windows? Will it effect speed? Is it third party or made by Intel?

Let me switch to my linux (dual boot) and I'll post my /etc/X11 files.

EDIT:

OK, resolution is fixed... maybe I didn't reboot after editing the file or something, sorry for the confusion.

BUT I still have the refresh rate problem. It's set at 76 Hz and Windows says my panel only supports 60. Shouldn't it be in a big smouldering heap by now?

How can I set it to 60? I didn't see it in the XF86Config-4 file.
