Many Problems

1. I recompiled the kernal, just for the learning experiance. When I rebooted, I got a message: Error while initilizing sound driver. Device /dev/dsp Cannot be opened (no such device). Sound server will continue using null output device. If I try to run alsaconf it says
modinfo:snd:no module by trhat name found.
Then alsa starts and says "No Supported Sound cards"

2. I installed a ttf font, and when I use it in GIMP, it is very small and cannot be sized bigger.

3. My mic doesnt work at all.

Thanks in advance!

Did you make sure to include the proper sound card module in your kernel (either as module or builtin)?

I didn't change the kernal config at all. I just wanted to recompile as a learning experiance. Im assume that because alsaconf worked before I recompiled, that it should work without changing anything. Maybe Im wrong tho. Can you tell me how to include it in the kernal compilation?

I still can't get this to work. Anyone have any ideas?

If you're using Slackware 2.4 stock kernel, try reinstalling alsa-driver Slack pack or get the latest ones from Alsa website and compile it yourself.

I went to the alsa website. Im really not sure what to download. There is so much on thier ftp site. How can I just reinstall the "alsa-driver Slack pack".

Thanks

I found how to uninstall and install packages, is there a command (possibly an argument to installpkg) that will let me reinstall? How is this done?

rootyard 03-10-2004 08:32 PM

uninstall and then install = reinstall

mattp 03-10-2004 08:37 PM

Okay, Ill try that tonight. Thanks for the tip!

I got the sound to work! How can I test the mic tho? I can't find any utilities that allow you to record sound. Any ideas on the font problem?

Your alsa install should include some type of mixer. This usually allows you to control input, output, etc.
