Manually copying kernel modules

Lets say that I wish copy the modules that I made for my kernel by using the 'make modules' command to my /lib/modules/KERNEL-VERSION-HERE without using the 'make modules_install command? Is it a simple matter of copying or is there also a number of soft links that must be made. And where exactly do the modules reside after issuing the 'make modules' command and before the 'make modules_install' command. Thanks, in advance.

make modules will make the modules within the /usr/src/linux/modules folder, compiled as object files (*.o)
make modules_install will install it into /lib/modules/kernel-version/ and categorized into drivers and many other module category names.
if you manually copy the modules there, make sure they are the same version as when u compiled them.
module mismatched will not be loaded even with forced insmod

the modules are initially just off of the kernel source tree. modules that end up as /lib/modules/<version>/kernel/[drivers,fs]/ will be in <kernel source>/[drivers,fs] just after being made
I don't think there are any links necessary, the module loader should know where to look. I know that I've installed some modules manually before (e.g. if I only added one) without any problems
