I'd start with Learning Perl, then get the Perl Cookbook (& possibly Programming Perl) if you really want physical books. Make sure you get the latest editions though ...

However, there is a lot of free stuff on the net:

There's also the Perl CD Bookshelf; pkg of CD/DVDs with 6 books on them.
