Mandriva Linux 2006 freezes when initilizing ALSA 1.0.6

I just installed Mandriva Linux 2006 Official on an external USB hardrive (I upgraded from Mandriva 10.1). Every package, except for the kernel source, successfully installed. When I get to the boot menu, selecting Linux, Linux-nonfs, or (the previous kernel) (all of which require entering runlevel 5), the boot procedure freezes after bringing up ALSA 1.0.6! It determines that I have an intel8x0 configuration, and there's an OK next to "Starting ALSA version 1.0.6: intel8x0," but after that the OS grinds to a halt. I can successfully boot under "failsafe" (runlevel 1, without many interfaces), but I can only start X Windows as root. How do I fix ALSA, or how do I disable it? I'd like to have multi-user support

Just to clarify--Everything runs smoothly to this point. Every interface load successfully. There are no complaints from LILO. My partitions are in place and mounted. The installation CDs are valid (md5 checksum tests were successful). The last thing the loader does before loading ALSA 1.0.6 is loading the CUPS print system (successfully).

The system fails to shut down NFS-statd when I press the power button on my computer. The system isn't frozen outright--it still responds to keypresses and will shut down successfully...

If I enter "linux 2" at LILO (I use the text menu), everything boots successfully. However, ALSA 1.0.9b boots instead! Weird, huh? If this is the problem's solution, how can I configure linux to boot to runlevel 2?
