Mandriva Installation Issues

I am trying to install Mandriva Free 2007 on one of my old PC's. The PC is currently running Windows XP Pro with an Intel Celeron 300mhz processor and 256mb ram. What I want to have the PC dual boot to both WinXP and Mandriva and I think my problem has something to do with the graphics card(Matrox Millineum II PCI). The reason I say that is because after I get to the Mandriva screen that asks if I want to Boot from Hard Disk or Install etc. the screen is unreadable.

I really don't know much about hardware or Linux. So any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
TRyan

It may just be that the computer is too old to support a graphical install - check whether the installer offers a text install option or whether it offers a line where you can type: linux text.

Would I find that on the boot menu?

TRyan 08-06-2007 09:15 AM

On the boot menu there are 2 Installation Options

1. Installation
2. Installation - ACPI Disabled

Neither of them work.

I am going to try the F3 option for mor options

Do you think I should try a different Linux Distribution to see if that works? I am not sure what is the best version to use, but from reading I have seen a lot of users say that Ubuntu or Kubuntu is good and easy to use. What do you think?

Duh, I guess I should have tried the option that said Text. So far it is working. Will let you know if I have any other issues.

Thanks,
Tryan

Glad to hear you have things moving at last. But please bear in mind that most of us are volunteers and we can't always follow up the very minute that you post a question. Anyway, let us know whether Mandriva installed OK in then end.

Btw, the hardware requirements for (K)Ubuntu are similar to those of Mandriva - if it really is a matter of hardware that is too old for a graphical install, you would more than likely be facing the same issue. In fact, you may be happier installing a lightweight distro: things like Xubuntu are far less demanding. Or if you keep Mandriva and you find it too slow, you can install XFCE on it instead of Gnome or KDE. It looks less attractive but, well, it all comes down to what you prefer: speed or good looks.

Thanks, and I definitely don't expect anyone here to respond to my every beckon call. I have the installation process running and I thing the desktop that I chose to run was something like ICE?? After getting everything installed hopefully I won't have the same issue as with the graphical install. We'll see... anyway thanks for your help and advice and I will most likely be posting again.

Thanks,
TRyan

So the installation is complete. The next step is getting the internet connection setup. Thanks everyone for their help.
