Sir,
I had sucessfully downloaded iso images and burned CDs with Mandriva free 2007CDI.i586 and Mandriva 2008. I had even sucessfully installed in linux.ext partition in my hard drive. The problem is when i restart the system i am getting the prompt localhost login prompt. what should i enter? please help me in this regard sir. what is failsafe mode. please explain me in this regard.

That's an indication that you did not set up your graphics card correctly and you are booting to a command line login. It looks like this:

localhost login:

followed by a blinking cursor. If there is no workable graphics configuration, the system defaults to a command line login like the above. You can either login at the above prompt with the username you selected and enter the password you selected when prompted or you can login as root with the root password you selected. You can then try and reconfigure your graphics setup from the command line but if you are unfamiliar with the command line you are probably better off just reinstalling and reconfiguring your graphics. That is done at the last screen on the installation IIRC.
