Do you still have the image [ISO file] ? If so then try to install it in virtualbox or vmware and see if it's working. If it does, then the problem could be with your DVD.
You may have had your internet connection dropped during the download, and the file may not be complete. I noticed you are running windows. Are you using a download manager or a browser? When I downloaded isos in windows, I always used the Opera browser to download, because it was useful when my connection was interrupted, and needed to resume the download. The download manager in Opera also verifies the size of the iso file to the bite, so you can determine if the entire file was downloaded.
I used internet explorer to download it but have installed opera and when i went to download it using opera the exact same iso is now 4.3gb. The first time i downloaded it using internet explorer it was only 268mb is this right?
Yes, the Mandriva Free edition is a DVD iso. It does NOT include the proprietary software.....But, you have the option with this version to install ANY desktop environment (I use XFCE). If you download the CD versions, they either come as KDE4 desktop or the Gnome desktop. But of course the live CDs (yes they are installable) have the proprietary software such as flash player, codecs for video and audio playback. To install the proprietary software in the 'Free' version, just enable these repositories: Main, Main Updates, Contrib, Contrib Updates, Non-free, Non-free Updates, PLF Free, PLF Non-free
