I'm using Mandriva 2008.1 since september with no troubles.

Today suddenly the taskbar disappears. For me there is no explanation. I think I don't click any special place, give any special command or type any special key.

I remember that in the Mandriva 2007 I had a menu to control taskbar visibility. I can't find nothing similar in Mandriva 2008.

Well... here I am. I can't find a solution. I had tried for 3 hours before post here.

I had similar problems, way back then (when I was using kde3.x).

I can't recall what I did to fix it, but what happens if you ctrl+alt+<- (backspace)

and login again? does it remain hidden/mia (missing in action)

Are you updated?

There is probably a better way to check...

After 3 hours, you've probably tried all of these options.

What does the /home/(user-name)/.xsession-errors show?

any Kicker or pannel entries.

Have you installed anything, or re-configured anything lately?

Look for missing packages...

rpm -Va | grep miss

see how you go.

p.s. I have kde4.1.2 on this system (completely different)random segfaults with Konqueror and Dolphin file managers.

and kde3.5 on my "kitchen box" and I'm pretty happy with the performance of kde3.5

Nothing different. The desktop is opened again withou taskbar. Before wrote the msg to the forum I tried to reboot the machine and nothing happens. The taskbar remains absent.

Sorry Ricardo, I meant "are you talking about" (pointing to)

Kicker is the start button and taskbar.

QPaint is part of the QT development environment that KDE is written with(the programming API).

I used to rename (I remember now) the /home/(username)/.kde file/directory to .kde.old (or something)

from a terminal and re-start x.

This will write a new .kde file/directory, but the defaults will be used,

so any of your customisations will be lost.

You can do this with out x and kde running (init 3), then restart x.

If you do it in gui mode, the file will re-appear(magic) with the same settings you have now.

I know this is a bit of a hack, but it works.

It may be a QT library, ie. QPainter or QObject.

But I never got that far.

ps, someone else from LQ told me this solution a while back.
