Question Mandriva 2006 RC2 - can't find proftpd

When loading Mandriva 2006 RC2, is the availability of “proftpd” dependent on hardware?

I’ve downloaded the Mandriva 2006 RC2 images (3 CDs) and loaded them to three different PCs:

Shuttle SS40G – 512Mb RAM, partitioned drive with XP
Shuttle SK41G – 768Mb RAM, partitioned drive with W98SE
Old desktop – Supermicro P5MMA m/b; Cyrix 200 MMX, 128 Mb RAM, 3 x HDD with 2006 RC2 on /HDA (Quantum Fireball 5.1Gb) on its own

A key point is that I want to set up the old box as a FTP server

Only the first one has “proftpd” available in the software manager.
The newer SK41G doesn’t have it and, more to the point, the last one doesn’t have it available either.
Other than that everything (even wi-fi) works fine – although KDE is understandably a bit slow on the old box.

I’ve re-installed to the SK41G and the old box - both with and without “WEB/FTP” selected at the package installation stage - still can't find proftpd either on a file or package search.

Is this a hardware issue? Why aren’t the same packages available in each of the specific installations?

Many thanks,

Are all these connected to the net ????

If so, it might be just as easy to follow the instructions at easy urpmi and then just run the updates etc and then it should (theoretically) be listed in the software available for install.

If that doesn't work, maybe you should search the discs, then copy the rpm to the hard drive and propgate it via network, or burn too disc.

Or if it's definitely on the disc (i.e. the install disc - well one of them), then surely you should be able to put the install discs in and run the updates and then be able to find it in the software manager.

I can think of no reason why it would be hardware dependant - except for maybe if it was 64bit systems, and you were trying to put it on a 32 bit system - that might throw up some errors or something daft!

Sorry if you already tried these ideas, but thats all I can think of.

regards

John

And when at easyurpmi remember to select the 'cooker' sources. You now should be able to get it using the urpmi command or the Mandrake Control Centre->Software GUI. Also it may be that its not installed by default due to Mandriva switching to another FTP server, perhaps vsftpd or something, as the default.

Also 2006 is still a beta so any errors should be reported to qa.mandriva.com and remember its prob. not suitable for production use.

I am having the same issue with the Mandriva 2006 DVD.

I have searched all over that DVD and in the Mandriva Install Tool and everywhere else for that matter and cannot find proftpd or _any other ftp server_ of any kind on there. What gives?

Update: I added a source from easy uprmi and it still does not contain a package for proftpd for Mandriva 2006

After posting to the Mandrivaclub forums I think I can see what they're doing. In the past the Powerpack (the 7CDs or 1 DVD) included everything in the main repository in 2006 it doesn't quite include everything - that honour is bestowed on the Powerpack+ which is even more expensive.

Of course if you just goto easyurpmi you can get the full main repository as you'd have in Powerpack+. Proftpd is in there for 2006.

Its the same for 2006RC2 (which uses the cooker repo) - the Proftpd packages are available on the mirror from easyurpmi. ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/mandr...586/media/main

Nice! The PlanetMirror source worked for me as well. I don't know why the one I added yesterday didn't have the package.

I hope that this isn't the tip of the iceberg and now that Mandrake and Conectiva have merged there is a more money hungry head on this monster. I'd hate to see the availability of common packages get moved to the "Gold" club level

Well any packages from main that are available in the gold club level are always available in the mirrors from easyurpmi. This is the first distro I think where there are some that are available for DVD download for the Gold club members (ie. the PowerPack+) but not available for the DVD download for the silver members (the normal PowerPack). Luckily its all available through easyurpmi.
