Mandrake Linux will only boot to a black screen

I have installed 9.2 and every time i turn it on, rather then going to KDE or Gnome
it goes toa black screen which looks like root. Ask me to login. When I do it
takes me to what I think is root. What do i do to get to KDE or GNOME?
