Mandrake Linux as a data server??

Is it possible to use Mnandrake 9.1 as a Data server, backup server, or file server?
I dont wanna use it as webserver, only as a data server or backup server...

Of course. One of the great aspects of linux is its versatility. Any distro can do any task you set before it.

I thought only Red Hat and SuSe were the only ones that could be used as data servers....
So, any distro would be suitable as a server???

Please Note: I dont want to use it as a WEBSERVER, only as a data or file server.....And remember, I dont want nothing "fancy" here. Just a basic data server setup. I want my Windows 2000 to act as a client workstation to access important files on a Mandrake Linux server. Thats all.

Im shocked...

Then all you need is samba so that the win comp can see the mandrake box. What made you think that only some servers can do some jobs? Hell if all you want is a data server, you could probably accoplish that with any OS that can see your network.

Dude, you seem to have this thing where somebody answers you, and you reply, and they again answer you, and AGAIN you're asking the same thing as for first post! Yes, Mandrake will be fine as your data server. So will Win 3.1, Unix, FreeBSD, Sun, BluGene, and everything else with 10/100/1000 network access. If somebody disagrees with that, they'll respond with a contrary view.
