Mandrake Install Problems
 

Hi there,
I've got Mandrake 10.0 Official release (the three cd one) and am having problems installing it. Basically it just gets to the screen that says welcome to mandrake 10.0 att he top and says press alt-F1 for here.....

It gets to the screen, which is only a few seconds in and then just freezes, no disc activity (cd or HD) and the keyboard doesn't respond!

I've done numerous searches for this problem and as such have md5'd the files as well as tried the noapic/nolapic command in the advanced options.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm running an Athlon 64 3200+ on an ASUS K8V mobo with a Radeon 9800Pro AGP card. I've already got Fedora Core installed on the machine (the 64bit version) but it doesn't work with my wi-fi card and the ndiswrapper is 32bit only. In the meantime I heard that MDK was newbie friendly so I thought I'g go for that instead of Fedora Core 32bit.

Did you download the 64-bit version of Mandrake?

Also, Mandrake 10.1 is better than 10.0--problems in 10.0 were fixed in 10.1 Official Edition...in case you want to try 10.1.

But other than wondering if you have the 64-bit version, I have, I'm afraid, no other suggestions at this point.

I've not got the 64bit version, its the i586 version. I was avoiding the 64bit version cause I need to use ndiswrapper which won't work (as far as I know) on a 64bit OS. I thought that the Athlon 64 was bacwardly compatible and could run a 32 bit OS (like Win XP or Mandrake etc) natively. Is this not right?

A quick Google search indicates the Athlon 64 is compatible with x86 operation; one article says something about the Athlon 64 being compatible in "legacy mode." I'm wondering if that's something you have to invoke via a BIOS setting? I just have a meager Pentium III setup, so I have no experience with 64-bit stuff. Wish I could help.

personally, even though I never had any probs whatsoever with installing mandrake (boxed set dvd powerpacks) I'd suggest that it would have been better to get the 64bit version - afterall, 32bit "might" work with a bit of fiddling, but what's the point of that when a 64 bit version is available and seems to get good reports.
