I JUST installed Mandrake 9.2 and rebooted. It came to a screen where I could login and enter my password, which I did, and then it wants a command. I was instructed by a friend to enter startx if it was configured and xf86config if it wasn't.
Well, I did both and neither worked. My question is, what do I have to do to login to the OS? What command does it take?

well if you entered your username and password, you are loggen in.
i suppose you mean you want to get to the gui, instead of command line
xf86config is run to configure you video hardware.
startx is used to actually run the gui.
you need to be a little more specific. why didnt they work? waht errors did you get?
just a side note, you might want to think about being a little more descriptive in your title, eg. "cant run gui in mandrake", rather than "mandrake help".
I recommend knoppix to find out all your hardware since it detects it all. then write down all it found reboot and do xf86config to configure your stuff.
Oh and if you have an built-in vid card (with shared memory) you just have to lower the resolution greatly in xconfig. then look for a patch955 or something for it. (that applies to Intel built-in vid cards, which are crap).
