Hello!

What kernel do you have?
And could you tell us please more about your modem?

Try this as root:
Code:

lspci
and post the output.

I found this on linmodems.org for "ambient technologies MD something". There is a package for Mandrake...maybe it helpes.

ScanModem utility?

The link to the ScanModem utility on linmodems.org seems to be corrupt. It leads to a Technion web page but the ScanUtility is nowhere around. Any ideas how to get this program? Can someone e-mail it to me?

I have a very similar problem with my Lucent Winmodem under Mandrake 10.0:

When trying to establish a new Internet connection, I am asked which modem to use: Lucent winmodem or other (although the LT modem is not installed in "Hardware"). After clicking the Lucent modem and Next, I get
"Warning: Sorry, we support only 2.4 and above kernels." (mine is 2.6.3???)
"Your modem is not supported by the system. See www.linmodems.org."

I downloaded some drivers for Lucent winmodem under Mandrake 10.0, but nothing changed.

The chipset of my modem is based on Lucent 1646T00 and the modem is
LT WinModem 56k Data+Fax or Agere F-1156IV/A3
It works perfectly in Windows 98.

Questions:
1. How to install a modem under Linux? Installing the drivers does not seem to work or the drivers are bad.
2. How can I install and test a modem without the graphic environment KDE - working only from the terminal window?

Thanks a lot,
Boris
