Mandrake 9 - Laptop

I'm running Mdk9 on a compaq presario 1700 laptop but I can't get the NIC to work
I'm using the control centre/ Network configuration to setup then starting the wizard for network and I/net configuration. so fsf so good
when I select the lan configuration it brings up the drakconnect dialogue box with the message:
insmod'ing module tulip failed at /usr/lib/libDrakX/ at line 55
Can any body help pleeeese

Get a command line (a shell) and type "su -" (without the quotes). When prompted for a password, type in the root password. If you typed it in correctly, you should get the root prompt. Now type "modprobe tulip" (again, without the quotes) and note the error message, if any. If there are no error messages, you have succeeded. Your NIC should work.
