hi im a newbie to mandrake 9.2 newb to linux pretty much.
im wanting to install yahoo i got the download. off of the yahoo site but im having trouble. ok i double clicked yahoo rpm it installed it says. log in as root and type rpm -i ymessanger-0.99.19-1mdk.i586.rpm i do that in terminal right i guess im not sure help here whould be aperciated im sorry i mean linux mandrake 9.1 |
You should install an RPM with: rpm -ivh file.rpm, that will provide the maximum amount of help.
But Yahoo Messenger is pretty crappy. I suggest you look at GAIM (gaim.sf.net), it works with ALL the protocols at once, including Yahoo. |
ok where do i type that command in?
|
Im sorry.
You type it into a "terminal" (also reffered to as "Console" or "shell"). If you are using KDE, there should be something called "konsole" (KDE likes to make everything start with K). You can get into this by looking for a little icon of a monitor-looking thing with a (sea)shell. Or pressing alt+F2, this will bring up a "run" box where you can type in "konsole". A few tips for when you start getting into the Command Line.: Linux is CASE SENSITIVE. "THIS" isnt the same as "this" or "tHiS". to become root in a console, you type "su", then enter your root password. |
ok thanks very much on that tip
|
it tells me no such file or directory when i type that command you told me i added the file name and i did it under root
|
You have to use that command in the same directory as where the .rpm file is. :D
|
its on the desktop
ok its installed now when i do the thing go to run then type /usr/bin/ymessenger it puts this ymessenger.kdeink on my desktop and says it will boot when linux reboots well it dont boot up and i cant run yahoo because when i click on that it wants to make it where it boots up again and stuff its jsut messed up |
Ok, try deleting the icon from the desktop, and then check in ~/.kde/Autostart for any reference to yahoo.
Then try the ymessenger command in a Konsole, not just from the Run... link. |

pcdebb, in the future, you should create your own thread for such questions as this is considered "thread hijacking" ;)
To get the other protocols you have to load a plugin for whichever one you are interested in using, then when you go to accounts/new then you should see the new protocol in the drop down. Cool |
