Mandrake 9.2 & SMC Ethernet Card

I will say up front, I'm a sever newbie here - a Linux virgin so pardon any strange/stupid questions I might ask here.

Anyhow, I'm running Mandrake 9.2 and I've installed an SMC 1244TX PCI ethernet card. No problem there. I'm still trying to configure the card. I'm not even sure if the drivers are install.

I ran the network updating wizard deal that comes w/Mandrake. The OS sees my card (but when I boot up, I see when it trys to bring up Eth0 it fails - something like that).

I'm not even sure how to install drivers, let alone how to verify if they are installed or to gather my IP address (like in windows how you can do the "ipconfig" from a cmd prompt). So, any help will be greatly appreciated.

ifconfig is equivalent, check man page for options.

with lsmod you can check which modules are installed.

and with modprobe you'll install/remove modules.
