Mandrake 9.2/10 CD Data disc access.

Mandrake 9.2 is currently installed but at some stage stopped being able to access data discs in the CDRW drive. The problem occurs with three different ATAPI CD drives so I am fairly sure its not hardware.

Knoppix 3.4 can run from this drive. (Have noticed however that when Knoppix logs out it cannot umount CD but does a cloop instead. Dont know if that is relevant.)

Under KDE Mandrake 9.2 I can play music CD from the drive, rip tracks using Kaudio Creator, and burn them back to the CDW using K3B.

The symptoms of the problem are that if I click on the desktop icon, Konqueror starts, shifts to devices: /nonemntcdrom and just sits there for about 30 seconds, then the whole system freezes, clock stops, keyboard is dead etc. The desktop icon for the floppy works fine.

The same pattern of events plays out if I use cd to go to the CD in a root console.

FStab entry is - none/mnt/cdrom supermount rw noexec sync dev=/dev/scd0 fs=udf:iso9660 -- umask=0 iocharset=iso8859-15 0 0

When trying to install Madrake 10 from boot the process goes as normal up to the point where <Trying to access Mandrake Linux CDROM disc Drive name >is displayed. After a short time with the CD drive still revving the system freezes, Alt 1,2,3 keys wont work etc.
The last part of the boot dialogue displayed is : have to insmod isofs, needs insmod, succeeded isofs
Then system freezes. ???

Curious.. there should be a space between none and /mnt/cdrom. I would of thought this to be a typo until you mentioned the desktop icon error. Have you modified the fstab file lately?

MichaElk Thanks for the input.
As an update I found a suggestion for getting the Mandrake 10 CD's to install which worked. That was to F1 then "expert ide=nodama". I was then able to upgrade from Mandrake 9.2 to 10.
I was hoping this would fix my problem. It hasn't.
It has however changed the fstab which now reads
" /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,codepage=580,iocharset=iso8859-15,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 "

After the reboot I had two desktop icons one to CDROM one to SCDO. After another reboot the SCDO icon disappeared.

The CDROM icon is connected to the CD as an eject command opens the tray. However attempting to access a data cd causes a freeze.

There is no cd entry in the mtab but I have not had time yet to follow this up, and have also lost my modem.
