Mandrake 9.1 Startx error

I have recently installed Mandrake 9.1 and am having problems starting X. When I type startx at the CLI I get the following error message: "execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 13). If anyone has any ideas on how I get configure Mandrake to get the GUI up I would be most grateful...

Well my first question would be why do you have to type startx? Unless you ran setup wrong when you installed. You might want to reinstall.

huh? he has to type startx cause he is booting to runlevel 3, he didn't set anything up wrong...anyways look in your /var/log/messages or your /var/log/xdm-error.log or something and see if there is any more detailed logged errors...or you can try running your XConfigurator again and see if you set some setting wrong...i am not really sure...thats all i can come up with.

When I ran the setup it asked if I wanted to start the GUI automatically, which I selected. Each time I start up the machine it takes me to the CLI login screen. As a matter of note, setup detected my VGA card correctly. I have also noticed when the station boots up DM (Display Manager?) loads ok, but when I shut the station down from the CLI it always says failed when it tries to kill DM?

well you can double check your /etc/fstab and see if thats actually the case for your machine to boot directly to the GUI.

anyways type in "ln -l /etc/X11/X" and see if that is pointing to your xserver and if it isn't do it manually by located your xserver and linking that to it...and then try agian....

and you could also try "mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.old" and run the xconfigurator again to make a new file and see if that helps..

Thanks, I'll give that a try...

Thanks to all who responded. I ran the installer from the first CD again and noticed that installer picked up the VGA card incorrectly, although it was only a subtle difference. When I selected the correct card and rebooted, it worked fine...
