Mandrake 9.1 Startup Display Problem

I just formatted and partitioned my hardrive into 4 sections. I installed XP home on the first and everything is great with that. I then installed Mandrake 9.1. The installation went well, except when it had finished booting up the display suddenly goes crazy. I can't really explain it but it goes all liney and there appears five of the same blurred menu which I can't read (you can just follow the mouse, 5 mouse pointers). I've installed Mandrake 9.1 on this computer before and the display worked fine, but I didn't partition it correctly and Windows stopped working, but since I've had to format my hardrive anyway I thought I'd give Mandrake another try with proper partitioning.

Can anybody suggest a way to fix this display problem so I can actually see what I'm doing?

Your help is really appreciated.

Thanks

It sounds like your vertical refresh or horizontal sync is wrong. Try pressing CTRL+ALT+F1, logging in and type "emacs /etc/X11/XF86Config-4". Look for the Monitor section. Find the Horizontal Sync and Vertical Refresh and set these to the correct values. Once these are correct (man X may help) type CTRL+X followed by CTRL+S to save and CTRL+X followed by CTRL+C to close emacs.
