Mandrake 9.1 Sound Problems

Ok here's the deal..........

I've installed Mandrake 9.1 which comes with the alsa driver already. I have integrated sound on my mother board, via8233.
When I try to play something in xmms for example it seems to be playing properly but of course I don't actually hear something. I tried installing the newer version of alsa 0.9.4 but that messed things up alot so I decided to reinstall everything. So here I am with a fresh install of Mandrake 9.1. Could someone help me get my sound working? thanks.

What do the following commands say (you can type these commands in a terminal session) :

"dmesg |grep -i via"
"dmesg |grep -i audio"

ps. have you checked your mixer settings :

Try the following programs, either from the graphical menu's or from a terminal session :

"aumix"
"kmix"

ps. Have you looked at the settings/properties in XMMS? (CTRL-p in the XMMS program). Look at the output plugin.
