I have a few questions. I'm pretty much a newbie to all of Linux, I've been a Windows user for about 8 years now, since 95 and I just installed Mandrake Linus 9.1 on my computer. I am unsure of how to get the sound to work for one, and also are there any very good, and or essential programs for Mandrake Linux? And lastly, the most important, and the one sole question that makes me stand out as an absolute , how do I log in as root, and how would I find out my password? Thanks in advance to whoever can help me, I really need it.
to log into root you need to unhide the root user.In kde you can open CONTROL CENTER then SYSTEM -change to admin mode-then un hide root in the users tab The root password is the one you typed in when you installed the OS.
post system details type of sound card ect.. and i am sure some one can help
apps-try Gimp, xine, chromium, xcdroast, gcombust, grip, open office apps, yanc(for nvidia tv out ect.,),dvdrip and make sure java is installed (not checking this caused me days of headaches.
Good luck

To check your sound first make sure your speakers are switched on
Then run aumix, make sure volume is up
If it's still not working tell us what soundcard you have and check harddrake (hardware in the mandrake control center) and see what it says about your sound card there.
I didn't look to much because I don't exactly know what I'm looking for. What I need is the sound drivers for ASUS P4PE motherboard. If someone could point me in the right direction and/or tell me what I need to please let me know. And I apologize becasue I'm kinda new to linux so forgive me if I'm
kinda slow. (From what I've been told I need to recompile my kernal after I get sound drivers or something like that)
If you give up on it walmart sells creative soundblaster 16 cards for about $25.00usa..I have used this card with several linux systems now and get great sound from it i also have a creative extigy external sound card $150 and it does not sound any better than the sb16.
just a thought.
