Mandrake 9.1 problems

i think im downloading these files from a bad site or something. its telling me that it is missing the file libpreo-3.9.5mdk.i586. the first time i tried to install it everything seemed cool but i wanted to put more on it. the audio video and graphic programs that are available. i tried to reinstall Mandrake and its not acting right.

okay blastzer.. this is what i think is wrong.... [your trying to install RPMs??] Thats a required file.. [a prerequisite] to install the file you want.. lib means library and thats an important library that the program you want depends on.. so first youll need to install THAT .... the URPMI database is a great help... its the best thing since sliced bread!! you have to configure the sources... and heres a wonderful site that makes it easy as ABC.. http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php -- you have to go to the configure sources... and follow the directions on that site... theres PLF and TEXSAR .. wonderful FTP websites... that the RPMdrake automatically downlodas from.. like for example lets say you need to download that program but you need that library, itll automatically look for the library and if its there it;ll download that and all other required files along with it.. however if its NOT at the FTP, no biggie! just seach on google and your bound to find it.. normally at sourceforge... its not mandrakes fault.... it just needs a file.. :) good luck man!!

man im new to this Linux thing. what can i do with that site?

oni0n56 08-18-2003 10:18 PM

okay give me your tech specifications and ill do this over again but for now im assuming some of them.. you have mandrake 9.1 with a i500 architecture.. and ill get you some good ftp sources... [ by the way.. .no such thing as a virus [or a good one at least..] for linux because of the way its built.. with root having the power to ruin your system..] ...

oni0n56 08-18-2003 10:26 PM

okay bro.. i chose the closest servers to your place.. [closest was florida..] .. and figured out what you need to do.. you log in as root... [root konsole or $su $[password]

urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/9.1 with hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.rutgers.edu/pub/mandrake/M.../Mandrake/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://ftp.rutgers.edu/pub/mandrake/M...1/contrib/RPMS with ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz

urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://ftp.rutgers.edu/pub/mandrake/M...ates/9.1/RPMS/ with ../base/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia texstar ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/dist...drake/9.1/rpms with hdlist.cz

If you get an error, check the mirror is accessible...
Also, you might want to type:

urpmi.removemedia -a

first, in order to reinitialize urpmi's setup.

[for mandrake 9.1 with i586 architecture and servers in florida...]

oni0n56 08-18-2003 10:34 PM

hmm if i didnt make myself clear ... you either go to root konsole or in a shell you type 'su' <enter> 'password' with no ' ' s....

then you type urpmi.addmidia plf .... hdlist.cz

then type the next line and so forth...

once you type all of them.. umm, close the window... and run rpmdrake or 'install software' from the menu.... it should work and if you get an error you type urpmi.removemedia -a [as root also...]

it should give you more sources from other servers like plf and texsar and stuff... not only your installation CDs... you can also instlal files off of your installation cd's ... thats the #1 thing to do.. #2 ftp them.. #3 search them from a website and get them.... #1 is the best and #2 is the second best thing to do..

Good luck bro..!!

here we go.........

iight everything seems to be going good for the moment. i do what some sound tho. it reconizes my sound card and all but im not getting any sound. i couldnt find any drivers for the AARDVARK DIRECT PRO 24./96, thats my sound card. im also looking for a program to record audio onto this. for the pass couple of years ive been using SAMPLITUDE 6.0 but i doubt they would have that for LINUx.....ill look around more after i post this up for ya. there is no AIM or YAHOO for mandrake either? well get back to me.......let me know whats up

oni0n56 08-20-2003 01:14 PM

okay bro.. as for the chatting.. get GAIM.. its waayyy better than aim or yahoo except maybe minus buddy icons and direct connect features and stuff.... but its all in one and all messages are in one window tabbed by the person your talking to... its goood i think youll like it... my sound was fuxxored up too... first time i turnedon my comp it worked aftre that.. no.. ive never heard of your soundcard but i guess i havent heard of many... check EVERYTHING that hs to do with sound... and like my mixer... was on mute all and stuff.. and download all the sound stuff from URPMI.. t hats really important.. get your URPMI database working ['rpmdrake' or "install software" ] ((has it worked yet??)) .. and download all the sound files and multimedia files and stuff... just leave it on all the time and download stuff :) ... sound i dont know how i fixed it but after like 20 billion things it fixed... im not sure about the drivers because i didnt GET drivers for my stuff ... for anything and it all works but ive never used my cds /dvd rom /floppy in Linux yet.. its probably a setting issue or a missing program/library.. as for the programs its all in the URPMI database but if thers dependencies that you cant find just go to google.com and search for the exact name of the thing .. like liba52 and youll find it under sourceforge probably and download it and installl it.. [you know how to install stuff? if not ask me...] ... okay! good luck mate!

blastzer0 08-20-2003 01:54 PM

boot disk

ok i havnt tried the things that we just talked about yet , but i have to have a boot disk in the comp everytime i start it. i dont know what i did wrong, can i get it with out that?

oni0n56 08-20-2003 03:30 PM

you need a boot disk?? to turn it on? ... and your using mandrake?? didnt you configure lilo or grub?.. and what do you mean.. make your questions clearer "can i get it with out that?"

Ianed 08-27-2003 09:00 AM

Ummm... I was having problems with urpmi so I did the whole 'urpmi.removemedia -a' thing and now I can't seem to get my cdroms (1 thru 3) enabled (I get the following messages:

unable to access hdlist file of "Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1)", medium ignored
unable to access hdlist file of "Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2)", medium ignored
unable to access hdlist file of "International CD (x86) (cdrom3)", medium ignored).

Am I just forgetting to do something after the command? I also tried going into the Software Sources Managers and Enabling them there but that only seems cosmetic. As soon as I 'Save and Quit' then restart it its back to what it was!

Ianed 08-27-2003 09:13 AM

Oh yeah, one more thing. So you can't actually find newer versions of software (e.g. gaim-0.67)?
