Mandrake 9.1 chat and further install

Ok i downloaded the 3 iso images and as of now i burned the first one and did the install. Here shortly burn 2 and 3.Question is do I boot into linux and run from the rom to install the contents of 2 and 3 or do I need to put disc 2 in and boot pc from it.Assuming it will in time tell me to put in disc 3.Now present dual boot with windows xp but looking to drop the windows here shortly.Right now I use msn messenger, yahoo and aol to talk to family and friends.Looking for recommendations on what programs to download to enable me to continue to talk to these people. Now I do know some chat programs do have linux version but asking people in the know what is the best way to go with this as far as chatting.I did read some where about a unix yahoo but said for red hat and debian and said probally wouldn't work with mandrake. So if you have some links to help a new guy out Thanks.Booting to the KDE desktop and I have to tell you this is awesome and look foward in time to knowing it as well as windows.

first of all welcome

with mdk 9.1 you can either

insert disk 1 and reboot
then choose upgrade
(actually this is pretty useless as it doesn't allow you to choose what to upgrade)

i'm not sure if you can boot from disk 2

see if the Install Software entry is in the Configuration/Packaging menu
if it is then you can choose what to install, dependencies are taken care of by the installer, or you are given a list of what's needed in order to complete the installation

as for chat programs

kopete does most of the known protocols (icq, yahoo, msn and so on) gnomeicu supports various protocols
both come with mdk 9.1
