Mandrake 9.0 installation on slave hdd

HI everyone, I just installed a new hard drive for linux as a slave drive. I've never done any work with Linux before so I'm not completely sure what do do. I chose Mandrake because of how everyone says it is the easiest for newbies. I looked in the forum and saw alot of stuff about installing red hat on a slave drive to a XP drive, however I saw nothing on Mandrake, so I was wondering if some one familier with the Mandrake installation could walk me through the crucial steps, like recommended or expert, and partioning to make sure I don't screw up my computer or my XP hard drive.

I'd highly appreciate any help.

Thanks

Sure, for your first time, go recommended. You will see too many things that would just confuse you if you go expert IMO. With recommended it will most likely find all the things you need and set it up just fine for a new user. When you get to the disk partitioning portion, just make sure you select hdd from the tabs at the top.

I'll be on here pretty much all day, so if you run into some problems or a snag, I'll be happy to help.

Also, make sure you select "development" even though it doesn't sound like what it is, you'll want it later on.

And for now, I'd say not to worry about installing any servers, unless that's your bag.

Cool

1 more thing that just came to mind... Alot of people seem to have confusion about where to install their boot loader (called LILO) go ahead and install it into the MBR, this will be one of your choices I believe, however it's been a while since I've done a recommended install, so YMMV.

Make a boot disk! This will definitely help if there are any errors from setting up the boot loader.

Cool

I just have one more question, i guess its technically a clarification, so I can chose recommended and stil have the installer install it on a slave drive, I'm just worried about my XP drive

That's what I too am unsure on. I do believe so, however if you get past that point in the install (if you are installing packages you are too far) then click back. On the side of the install there are bubbles that allow you to move back to old parts of the install to adjust things as necessary.

I can understand you are worried, I would be as well. I do think you'll be fine though.

Cool
