Mandrake 9.0/9.1 troubles

3 problems:

I recently gave up on trying to get RH9 installed, and went back to mandrake 9.1...

however, on the first boot, I managed to shut it down incorrectly, and now, when I boot up, I get the following message at a few different points:

ldm_validate_partition_check() failed : disk read error

nothing is affected in the system, but I'd sure like my pretty green [OK] signs back to normal..

I have a ZIP drive, an external MO, a CD, DVD/CD, and 2 hard drives (one running winXP, the other running mandrake, with a 500 meg FAT partition as well)
This happened with 9.0 too, but I forget what I did to get rid of it...

Another prioblem involves logging into KDE 3.1 as root... no desktop. The folder exists, and i can access it, but it isn't shown. My other (limited) account does have the desktop though.

And finally: Anyone want to point me to a good tutorial for how to configure a SB Live! on mandrake?

for "root" desktop...make sure that your "security level" is not "high/paranoid". under medium security level you can access.
also...using graphical login for root is not a good idea...????

Mandrake 9.1 should by default detect your sound card and play sound well. If not try to configure it through "control" center (i think in hardware section)....even then if you cant play sound then compile and install "alsa..."

the first and most important thing is to activate "soundcore" via modprobe, to do it use "modprobe soundcore", if it returns something then its fine otherwsie you have to compile your kernel with module support...(You can find more about it in LDP in "Kernel-HOWTO" section).

once soundcore is activated.
just download alsa-driver-xxxx.tar.gz, alsa-lib-xxxx.tar.gz, alsa-util-xxxx.tar.gz and unzip then and use in each directory "./configure;make;make install" for directory. for the rest of the configuration go to http://www.alsa-project.org

As for the ldm_validate_partition errors, don't worry about them. They concerned me for a few minutes when I first saw them - it's just that it cannot find the partitions on your zip disk and MO drive. It get these same errors regarding my atapi ZIP and my usb card reader. You'll probably find that if you boot with discs present in all your devices, you won't get these errors.
