Question

I just installed Mandrake 8 on my HP Laptop and I have to say it was the easiest Linux installation ever. However when I started it up for the first time the mouse pointer was replaced with a big box that looks like TV static. I can still move it around and click on things but if I run a program the computer locks up instantly. I wasn't sure if this was a mouse issue or a display issue. I would appriciate any help I could get.

You may need to edit the XF86Config file to get rid of the mouse cursor prob.

You need to uncomment the line which goes:

# sw_cursor

This should solve the TV problem, and may stop the comp from locking apps.

Question

Ok two more questions. Do I edit XF86Config or XF86Config-4 or both? Also is there any way to boot up to just a regular text prompt instead of the graphical login? Since it is locking up so much I can barely bring up a terminal window without crashing.
Thanks

Which version of Xfree did you install? Most likely it was XFree86 4.03, in which caseit would be XFree86-4 which you edit. To bring up a terminal login you can simply press

ctrl-alt-F1 (any other F key at the top of your keyboard)

To get back to the graphical login press

ctrl-alt-F7

Cool

Ok I got the mouse pointer working but Linux is still locking up a lot. When it locks up the display flickers a couple times and the title bar on windows turn into static. My system is a Celeron 650, 64 MB RAM. I would think Linux would run fine. Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks

You could try both versions of Xfree86 which Mandrake has. This may require an install though if you can't do it in Mandrake itself.

Are you totally sure that you are using the right driver for the Graphic card?

Unhappy

I'm pretty sure I have to use XFree86 4.03 because my video chipset is an S3 Savage and that is what the XFree86 website had listed. How would I switch to the previous version if I wanted to? Or is there any documentation on the web on how to switch to the previous version?
Thanks

Try www.linuxdoc.org for the XF86 How-to. Not too sure how to do it myself!

The first time I installed Mandrake 8.0 I had problems with X-windows. When I would view menus in open windows it would leave trash on the screen. It would crash and other things. Basically to fix it, I reinstalled and stopped using KDE. I have had no problems with crashes or trash on the screen with Gnome. I think maybe there is a small issue with the version of KDE that came with that distro.

(Beware: my opinion, I have no proof that this is the case, only personal experience)
