Mandrake 8.2: Where exactly is the Kernel located?

Hi Y'all,

is wanted to compile anew kernel. My problem is, i don't know where the currently used kernel is located. I wanted to back it up, so i searched in the directory usr/src, but the only entry in this directory is another directory called RPM. SO, anybody knows what's the deal with that??

The kernel is often kept inside "/boot" Usually you put the new kernel in alongside the old one, so that you can revert to the old one if necessary.

There is a kernel HOWTO and the Linux Documentation Project

you may want to backup your kernel source files too, which are kept under /usr/src.
