Hello,

I'm a total Linux newbie wanting to try it out. I'm trying to install it on my Eurocomm 700 celeron laptop.

I am getting an error message :

VFS: Cannot open root device "ram3" or 01:03
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:03

I've tried deleting my partition thinking that it may be a problem with my previous installed os "win2k".

Again I'm new at this, it may be an obvious error, or possibly not able to install this on a laptop.

Anyone with any advice I'd appreciate it, i'd love to see how linux works.

One of my colleagues tried the same thing on his laptop and he experienced some troubles as well. We never got Mandrake 8.1 working on that laptop. Might be the hardware is too new for that version. Mandrake 8.2 didn't give any troubles.

If I were you, I would download the latest available Mandrake release and try to install that one.

Btw, in case you like to try out other distro's as well. I've installed Redhat 9 and it also looks very cool.
