Post Mandrake 10 on Thinkpad T20 lists USB linux modem as unknown

My T20 has an internal winmodem that I don't want to try to get working for now. I have a USB modem that i've used in winxp, & was shipped with linux drivers. I went at it windows style, attached modem, restarted, ran the rpm, but harddrake recognises it as unknown. Must be more to do?

Thanks for the reply--lotsa good info there & on my first look found some helpful stuff but will require some digging in. In the meantime, if the modem is linux compatible, is installing it as simple as plug it in, run the supplied rpm, & it should go? Or is there tweaking involved? Tx

penguin4; Sorry 4 long delay in answer--a few incredibly full days. Couldn't agree more about Mandrake distro. Never tried other distos so can't really compare, but matches what I have found in Mdk. Actually, thinking of the evolution of windows from DOS to winxp, & the resources & manpower spent--theres a quantum leap to linux. Just gotta remember that figuring it out it supposed to be fun!
btw; I thought that my old model laptop, ThinkpadT20, could be a problem with Mdk, so I decided to install on my Athlon desktop. Installation was a nobrainer, & I was listening to mp3 on totem in 20 minutes, & browsing the internet in 30 min on my 3 yr old, 3x repaired from lightning strikes prolink modem! Awesome!

I browsed the site you suggd & couldn't find mention of my usb modem, so will concentrate on getting my winmodem going for now. Tx!
