mandrake 10 - no sound
 

I installed Mandrake 10 on my computer, and I cannot figure out how to get the sound to work. I've tried playing CD's and mp3's in xmms and have visited websites with sound; I have no sound at all. :confused:

I tried looking at other people's questions, so I installed the alsa software from the software management place in the control center. I also checked to make sure it was not muted by going to Applications > Multimedia > Sound > Volume Control .

I have an SB Live! (audio) soundcard by Creative Labs. I guess it is using the ALSA "snd-emu10k1" driver and an alternate driver is the "audigy:emu10k1" driver (I looked in the control center). I am curretly using Gnome in Mandrake 10.

I'm sorry if this question has already been asked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem, i am also running Mandrake 10, with KDE 3.2.

I looked in hardware in control center and it had my sound card there and it was the right one. Why doesnt sound work then?:confused: :confused:

I have no clue what to do to get the sound working. I'm used to using windows where everything is done for you. My friend talked me into trying Linux and assured me that I'd be able to find help in this forum and in books. I'd like to learn linux and see what it's all about, but I'm not very computer smart.

I know very little about sound cards but you could try looking at the HCL (http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/sh...php?product=56) , one of the comments might help you, http://opensource.creative.com/ be of any use? You could try seeing if it worked in KDE so you would know whether it was a linux or a mandrake problem...

Thanks for trying. I'm sorry to say I either didn't understand what I was looking at or just didn't find anything to help me. I know next to nothing about linux. I tried reading the starter guide at http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/fdoc.php3 , but didn't find anything helpful. I don't know where to look for information about how to fix the problem or even to find out what my problem is.

If anyone can help, here is more information. I am playing around in the hardware section of the control center. I tried running the configuration tool and found the troubleshooting section. I opened the Gnome terminal and entered some of the commands listed.

I typed in "/sbin/chkconfig --list sound" and got:

sound 0 off 1 off 2 on 3 on 4 on 5 on 6 off

I don't have a clue what that means, but the off's could be bad?

I typed in "/sbin/chkconfig --list alsa" and got:

alsa 0 off 1 off 2 off 3 off 4 off 5 off 6 off

i typed in "aumix -q" and the command was not found

Does no one know anything about this? Its a problem not being able to access sound watching media files silently. The sound card drivers are obviously fine, what is it so?

Don't know if its proper but from a rookie also how can it hurt, I figured it out.
Go to the shell console( black screen like dos ) And type in"su", that gets you to the root.Type in "sndconfig"and hit enter. Now work your way through the Sound Configuration Utility. You should be able to get it from there.

One thing you should never do is blame Linux in general or give up after one distro. For instance, I have tried many and most work good, but I recently gave Yoper a shot and it did some pretty weird things that I've never seen before. I wouldn't recommend it. Honestly, wouldn't recommend Mandrake either. SuSE rocks when compared to Mandrake. You can do an FTP install of the Pro version. It works great. I use SuSE 9.1 Pro and have never had a problem with it.
