Mandrake 10 ISO Install

Ok, before the flames begin about threads of similar material start I want to say that I have spent several hours searching for the answer and can't find a solution. Now I am pretty much a linux n00b so bear with me. I have been running 8.2 off and on for about a year now.

System Setup:
Master HD - 80 gig setup on 2 paritions for Windows
Slave HD - 20 gig setup for Linux (Mandrake 8.2 already loaded)
CD-R : Master
CD-Rom: Slave

I downloaded the 3 iso files. No problem, 15 hours later I download the trial for Nero and burn my discs. Still no problem, I can see all of the files fine in Windows. The autorun even runs within windows. I reboot to boot from my cd-rom (floppy drive doesn't work so i set it up to always boot from cd-rom first) and instead of the installer starting up Lilo boots. I tried this several times and still Lilo loads. Ok, so I try the 8.2 discs and it boots the installer for 8.2 so i decided to wipe my linux partitions while i was at it and tried the 10.0 discs again. Lilo still loads. I have tried putting disc 1 in the CD-Rom drive but that doesn't seem to help either, per Mandrake's solution for cd drives not booting.

Does anyone have any idea how to get the burned ISO discs to work correctly? I wanted to do a fresh install because my c complier has never worked correctly. I am totally lost here because most of the other threads deal with ppl not burning the discs correctly. Also my new 10.0 ISO discs look almost identical to the 8.2 discs.

Did you burn the images right? I mean, it's not like you can drag'n'drop the iso's and burn.

You have to tell nero that you are burning iso images. When you open NERO, the CD burning wizard window opens. Close it.

Click on File. You will see a Burn Image option. Click on it and select the iso to burn. then burn. Then the cd's will become bootable.

If this is the procedure you followed, then maybe the downloaded iso images are corrupt.Check their md5 checksum. On the page where you downloaded from, there must've been a list of md5 for all images and a utility for windows to check the md5 of those images.

Get that utility and check the md5 of those images. If the md5 value that you get is different from the ones listed on the site, then my friend, you would have to redownload the iso files(whichever's md5 does not match).

There is an MD5 file on the ftp site from Texas Tech, but no utility so I will search for one. I will check that and post back when I get home from work, about 12 hours from now...lol

EDIT: Btw, yes I burned the CD correctly with Nero. The files show up and are almost identical to the file tree for the 8.2 discs that I have.

Ok pal, check out

you can also do a simple google search and find many usch utilities for windows for free.

OK..just ran fastsum and everything looks fine. I heard that if you burn at the max speed of the burner that it might cause problems. I am going to try and burn disc 1 again and see what comes of it.

Edit: That didn't work either. Man I have wasted a bunch of cd's for this...lol

LinuxLala 05-13-2004 12:37 AM

Well I don't think that speed has anything to do with this, but it is too late now :)

Have you tried re-installing 8.2? maybe 10 just won't work on your system, and that'd be an easy way to find out. my crappy Dell would only work with Mandrake or Redhat 7, untill Mandrake 10 came out which works fine

LinuxLala 05-13-2004 03:04 AM

If that had been the case, then the problem would ahve occured either during installation or during post installation configurations.

IMHO, this is just a case of cd's not burning properly. I am not saying that you(Seraph1) are doing anything wrong. I just remembered I've had similar problems.

I always had to close all apllication, programs before I was able to burn any cd's. B'coz nero used to burn the cd's unusable. You'd be surprised to see how many cd coasters I've got :D

But Seraph1, your cd appears to be fine, 'coz you can access it through windows. I can't understand what the reason for this strange behaviour is.

Seraph1 05-13-2004 06:53 AM

I conceed to the almighty Mandrake demon. I give up on trying to get 10 to work. I have wasted atleast 7 discs trying to reburn at different speeds, I don't have a functioning floppy drive, power management wasn't the cause, and the iso's were downloaded fine. I have absolutely no idea why this isn't working, but I am planning on getting a new burner so maybe once I get it I will be able to get it to work. And if all else fails maybe I will just purchase the damn thing. So for now it's back to 8.2 and I will try and upgrade from it. Thanks to everyone that has tried to help fix this issue.

Just to add to the mess if anyone else is having this issue. I am running win2k and went into the disk management tool and reformatted the drive to FAT32 and rebooted and nothing happened, other than lilo starting up. I don't have a functioning floppy drive so I can't make bootable floppies. 8.2 install wizard starts when booted from a CD so I know that I can still go back to that if needed. All of my hardware is supported in 8.2 and never had a problem with it. So the conclusion that I have come to is that either:

A) Mandrake 10 has an issue with my outdated burner 8x write 4x rewrite 32x read

B) Nero can't burn an ISO to save its life on my machine

C) I have completely fah-hosed the burning somehow (weird that the autorun kicks in while in Windows and I can see the files fine in Windows)

---------------

ok as a last resort I tried it on my machine at work and the installs boots fine from the CD Rom. Now lets just hope that a new burner will fix this issue on my machine at home.

LinuxLala 05-13-2004 07:36 AM

What can I say... shit happens :)

Better luck with the new drive.

Best.

P.S. the important lesson that I learned --- if you download an iso image, the md5sum is OK, you burn the cd okay and it still don't work... Test it on another machine before burning another copy. ;)

wijnands 05-13-2004 07:48 AM

strange. I downloaded 10rc1, checked the md5 and burned them with 120% alcohol. install went smoothly.

LinuxLala 05-13-2004 10:57 AM

As we have come to believe, the cd drive has some issues with reading the burned cd's.

Seraph1 05-13-2004 11:32 AM

It's not that the drive has issues reading the burned discs. Which is rather funny since this drive is the one that made the discs, but it's rather Mandrake that is not working with the drive. The drive can read the discs just fine in windows, in fact the autorun menu shows up when the Mandrake 10 discs are inserted. For some weird reason neither of my drives will boot from these discs. It seems more like a conflict than an inability to read the discs. The discs are burned ok because I got them to boot from my work's pc. So I know the discs are good. I am picking up a new drive hopefully tonight and we will see if it fixes the issues.

LinuxLala 05-13-2004 01:45 PM

I understand. I did mean that some conflict is preventing the mdk cd's to boot. 'Coz we all know, if the cd is accessible/booting in another machine, it is fine. Period.

No more proof required. Hey, how about you getting a drive from ur workplace or a friend's place b4 actually buying a new one?
