Mandrake 10 install for newbie

I have rarely used linux and am very keen to have dual booting system. I am currently running xp pro with sp1 and have downloaded mandrake 10.

The files are called "Mandrakelinux-10.0-Community-Download-CDx.i586.iso" where x is cd number.

My system config is:

Gigabyte ga-7vaxp-a ultra
Athlon xp 2600
80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA
250GB Western Digital 8mb Cache 7200rpm Serial ATA(to be installed asap)
512MB Corsair 3200 DDR RAM
ATI 128MB Radeon 9000 Pro
17" Iiyama ProLite E431S TFT
SoundBlaster card

I would like to install mandrake but have little knowledge of it or other linux or even unix systems. The only thing I am aware of is that there me be an issue when i install it onto second serial disk(250gb).

Does anyone have any good advise or good links!

Any info appreciated

Mandrake 10 install

Hi guys...I had a beautiful install....I'm using Mandrake 10 Official and had no problems at all. I don't understand what the problem could be with the ATI card...I have a "ATI 7000 64mg. and it soars like a rocket!!! along with it ...AMD Athlon XP 2200 1.8 ghz. The only thing I might have done different was that I made a 5gig. linux partition first using "partition magic" Then booted from the Mandrake disc...it saw the partition right away and install went like a charm...

Search the forums. This "problem" about how games run slow with ATI cards has been addressed about 4.58 x 10^9999 times. In a nutshell, you guys did not install your ATI drivers correctly, and I don't blame you. It's not as simple as it sounds for newbies.

Okay, not your fault, but for the 1,000th time here's how to install ATI drivers, and you WILL run into problems and when you do, post your problems.

1) download ATI drivers at ati.com website
2) install kernel-source
3) go to console
4) su
root password
5) rpm -i filename.rpm
6) type fxlgrconfig, or something like that. It'll tell you after your install the drivers.
7) after going through the text-based configuration, play a game like Tux Racer

If you are using Mandrake 10, then you will encounter problems, but let us know when you do and I'll post a link in the GAMES sectino of the forums where it talks about converting the RPM2TGZ and manually installing the drivers. It's a real pain. Good luck

Radeon up to 8500 are in xfree4.3. Above need the drivers from the site. Hence the problem. As far as the SATA thing, your controller will either be recognized or not. If there is no drive showing in the install dialogue to install to, you will have to try another, likely.
