Mandrake 10 - Hangs on UT2k4 install
 

I was advised by someone else that this problem would best be addressed by going to 9.2.. the only thing is, I don't want to do that.. and I'm not certain it would help my problem. Basically my drive is causing mandrake to stall on installs. It seems to run movies fine off the dvd drive, but anything installation-wise will stall at some point. I was able to install one of the packages off the disk, but only after doing it twice (of course UT2k4 is so long of an installation it will always crash at somepoint.. it'll never get further than halfway).

Anyway, so I want to know if I really should go down to 9.2, or if I should wait for the final version of 10 to come out (this month right?) or if there is some other solution I can try.

Just for information.. this is what I've tried so far

hdparm -d1 /dev/hdd also for completeness hdparm -d0 /dev/hdd
hdparm -c1 /dev/hdd

Neither of those seems to work, though I think the drive was faster when I had dma enabled (hard to tell exactly.. but it did get further in the installation with it on)

*shameless bump* I really need advice on how I can possibly fix this problem. Do I need to wait for the final of 10 this month or is it going to be crappy also and end up also stalling?

Is there no way to fix it besides a downgrade, and might downgrading not fix the problem? Note.. windows has given me no problems using this drive at all (XP that is).

Maybe the haddrive is on it's last legs? That was the case with my brother, he had similar problems to you. Then again, it may be a problem with the hdparm settings.
It may be an apic problem.
Try going to mcc->boot->boot loader. Check "force no apic" and maybe acpi shouldn't be enabled.
There's also a package that helps tune the haddrive. I found it in rpmdrake, "drakopt". Maybe it will iron out any problems with hdparm, if that's the prob.

I'm relatively certain it's not related to the hard drive but the dvd burner (hdd is the dvd device name).. sorry if I wasn't clear on that..
