Question Mandrake 10 /dev/dsp Permission Denied

I'm newish to linux and have been trying a couple of ditros (Suse 9.0 and Madrake 10). I was able to get my sound working on Suse 9.0 but not my Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL modem so I decided to try Mandrake 10. I've now got the modem up and running (it was an absolute doddle) but have not been able to run sound.

When I start up, I get the message that /dev/dsp is Permission Denied. I think the system has detected the soundcard but it aint letting me use it. Here's the results from an lsmod:

snd-seq-midi 8160 0
snd-seq-oss 31232 0
snd-seq-midi-event 7552 2 snd-seq-midi,snd-seq-oss
snd-seq 51024 5 snd-seq-midi,snd-seq-oss,snd-seq-midi-event
snd-pcm-oss 51812 0
snd-mixer-oss 17952 1 snd-pcm-oss
snd-cs46xx 86088 3
snd-rawmidi 23616 2 snd-seq-midi,snd-cs46xx
snd-seq-device 8008 4 snd-seq-midi,snd-seq-oss,snd-seq,snd-rawmidi
snd-ac97-codec 58148 1 snd-cs46xx
snd-pcm 93156 3 snd-pcm-oss,snd-cs46xx
snd-timer 24484 2 snd-seq,snd-pcm
gameport 4480 1 snd-cs46xx
snd-page-alloc 11972 2 snd-cs46xx,snd-pcm
snd 52484 17 snd-seq-midi,snd-seq-oss,snd-seq-midi-event,snd-seq,snd-pcm-oss,snd-mixer-oss,snd-cs46xx,snd-rawmidi,snd-seq-device,snd-ac97-codec,snd-pcm,snd-timer
soundcore 9248 1 snd

Has anyone got any pointers as to what I can try to get this thing working?

All help appreciated.

Cheers

Jeff

try this command as root:

chmod a+rwx /dev/dsp

this command will give everybody all permissions on the sound device.

Thanks for the reply. I tried that but it kept resetting permissions to 600 after reboot. After a bit of searching I found that this was being done by /etc/security/console.perms, I've since changed this so it goes to 660 at reboot but was still not getting any sound. I've also added myself to the audio group and checked that the files in the sound directory are part of the audio group.

After a bit more searching online, I ran alsaconf and managed to get the sound running fine but this stops working on reset. I've checked with Hardrake (I think it's called) and it seems to be showing me that the sound card is recognised and that a driver is loaded (I think).

Any pointers on what I need to do to get the sound working at startup (short of running alsaconf 1st thing every time)?

All help appreciated

Jeff

I don't think so. I initially tried using the mixer but it didn't do anything to the sound. Besides, the volume indicator in Totem seemed to be over around half way.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I was lucky with my install. I worked properly without much intervention from me. Only had this nasty whine coming from the speakers when I installed, as the mic was unmuted. If you can see that the master and PCM vulumes on your mixer (kmix, alsamixer, whatever) are set to some volume, then the problem is another one. Since your modules load for the card, it should work, one would think. On reboot, you have this problem. Sounds like your settings are not being saved. You can change these settings and have them stick on reboot with alsactl.
