I have a Compaq 2135 and this is the best information I have found to get the synaptics touchpad to work on Mandrake 10. Just remember to log in as root to install. Your HP should be the same?

Just as a reminder...for any Linux distribution that you download, I'd recommend performing checksums on them OR checking the media during installation to make sure it's good.
