Mandrak display
 

I was starting to try out Linux when my then-monitor went bad and I had to put a different, smaller monitor on. Unfortunately, simply selecting the "new" monitor off of Mandrake's list of choices resulted in a very poor display. It looks a though it is rendering 640x40--that is to say, very pixelated. Fonts appear small, and the whole screen is rendered.

I tried setting the resolution down. No luck.

Most perplexing is that in the meantime, I have gotten a new monitor-- Trinitron P991--which is just like what I had originally. Still, despite selecting the monitor and increasing the resolution in Mandrake, it looks as though the system is using the scale of 1024 x 768 with the actual resolution of 800x600 or smaller. Fonts are small (as they would be on high resolution) but pixelated (as they would be on a low resolution).

Once again, let me point out that the correct monitor and an appropriate resolution have been selected using the Mandrake control panel.

So what gives? Any guesses?

are u sure it was the moniter not the video card that went bad????? i would check video card if you havent done that already.

I know the monitor went bad. It was making snapping noises and going blank.

Windows has worked fine with any of the three monitors mentioned in this story (I've got a dual-boot setup).

If you think there's something else I need to check, let me know.

sorry the only 2 things that came to mind to cause that were moniter and video card. you know one more thing comes to mind that ive seen many many posts about what kind of card do u have i know theres alot of posts on the niavida video cards (spelled wrong)

The only thing i would think of doing is getting a new monitar.

Well, for anyone else with this problem:

Mandrake system resolution is not the same thing as Mandrake desktop resolution. When both are set to a reasonable resolution -- it looks fine.

I am not sure why the two settings aren't synonymous, but it takes care of my problem.

What do u mean by "system resolution" and "desktop resolution"? Can you point out where you can change each one?

Sorry it took me so long to reply.

With my Mandrake KDE destop, there's a monitor icon in the system tray which changes the desktop resolution. However, this apparently operates independently of the resolution setting accessed through the start menu / system control panel. I did not experiment to determine the exact nature of the relationship; but setting the system resolution up did not improve my desktop until the desktop resolution was also set up. Maybe they are completely independent, and the desktop can be higher than the system; I didn't check.
