Managing "sessions"

Hello,

This is really "n00b" and simple...but I don't know where else to look for the answer.

In my kde session manager I have 3 login options:

1) Restore previous sesson
2) Restore manually saved session
3) Start with an empty session

What do those 3 options mean?

My (limited) understanding is that "session" refers to the programs, software / hardware settings, etc you were running last time you were logged in.

Is that description both complete and accurate?

If I recall correctly, #1 was the default. Now it is on #3, though I can't remember when (or why) I changed it to #3.

If anyone would care to explain, or, point me to an educational site, then I would appreciate help.

Thank you folks!
