Making Linux portable on External HDD

This question is mainly conceptual.

Would it be possible to take an installed Linux distribution and put its files on an external hard drive so that the same distribution with user preferences, etc. can be loaded up on other computers (or at least other computers with an i386 processor like the processor I have for the Linux distribution I use now).

Otherwise, what would you suggest to literally pack your computer into an external HDD?

Actually I realize that Knoppix and an external HDD with all files seems reasonable. It was suggested in the 1st related thread

Sometimes I wish that search results matched related threads.
