Making Gentoo LiveCD
I feel like a total n00b asking this, but then again I am so I'll ask anyway.
I downloaded the Gentoo LiveCD file, I want to burn it into a DVD... there's a whole bunch of files and I at first assumed I just had to copy the contents of the file I downloaded (install-amd64-minimal-2006.1) onto a DVD and voila, it'll boot and I can begin installing... but there's an option on the burner software titled "make a disc bootable", so I select that, then it gives me all these choices I don't know about: Quote:

Then there are a couple of other options, but the relevance of any of them to burning a bootable linux dvd is questionable... if anyone can shed some light on the two groups of options quoted above I would be grateful enough. Maybe I should just burn the contents of install-amd64-minimal-2006.1 on the DVD and not worry about all these other settings but I tried it already and it didn't seem to work and I don't want yet another iridescent coaster. By the way I got a AMD Duron chip, have I chosen the correct iso? (amd64-minimal-2006.1) |
is it possible that for a linux system there's no need to consider the "make disc bootable " option? All the options given under that seemed to be Windows specific.

Amd64 wont fly with a Duron chip - you'll need something like x86.
Either this for a minimal install CD or that for a live CD. The DVD seems to be only available on bittorrent and then you'd need the i686 version. You don't need all that emulation stuff - just burn the iso.Any halfway decent burning app should be able to handle that. You are doing this from windows or Linux? |

There are two .iso's on that minimal install link for x86,
install-x86-minimal-2007.0-r1.iso (May) and install-x86-minimal-2007.0.iso (April) I'll just burn the latest one onto a CD (not a DVD), shove it into the drive, reboot with CD-boot in BIOS and expect it to work. :) Right? |
If you use Nero it should burn it automatically ok if you just doubleclick on the .iso file.
There are various howtos. Besides I wouldn't really recommend Gentoo for a Duron - I installed it on a Duron back then and it does take a looong time to compile everything. |
