Making DVDs
 

Howdy:

I've converted some .divx files to DVDs. Did it a couple of ways. It takes quite a while. The result is an iso image. Then I use K3B to burn the DVD, and it says "success." Then I eject the disk, put it back in my laptop, and it plays like a DVD should. But... when I loan the DVD to friends, the can not play it on their DVD players. I've tried two different movies, and two different friends (DVD players). They tell me their player does not recognize it.

Do you have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

I do not think that you do some think wrong
I must confess I never did it a dvd , but in the past with cd
If I put back in to writer/reader it works perfect but if I put it in an other player mostly it goes wrong.
The explanation they give to me was that each player read the data in a little bit different way.

When you buy a dvd or cd the make it in that way that it is possible to play in different player.

Not all stand alone DVD players can play divx files. The standard for DVD is mpeg2. The other issue is that not all players can read DVD-R (or any of the variations). Taking it one step further some players can read Pal and NTSC format but others can only read one of these formats.

Try burning at a lower speed.
The lower the burn speed the more likely it will be readable on more players.
So use the lowest speed for best compatibility.
Similarly, DVD-R seems to be less problematic than DVD+R.
Ditto for single-layer vs double-layer.

Okay. I'll try some more. It's frustrating because it takes so much time to make them.
