Making a root/boot system

Hello,

I'm trying to make a basic root/boot system on an empty partition.
Ext2 filesystem and the kernel I'll be compiling is 2.6.22.5.

As I make a huge mess of things repeatedly, I wanted to ask, can anyone point me to a guide on how to do this? Or give me the general outline
of what I should be doing.

I couldn't find such a guide after looking on google.

Also, how should I compile and install the kernel? Right now what I'm doing is mount the 'target' system on /mnt of my 'host' system, compile
the kernel on the host system, then issue the following:
Code:
sh arch/i386/boot/install.sh 2.6.22.5 arch/i386/boot/bzImage System.map "/mnt/boot"
Then, depending on whether I tried adding module support or not, I also
Code:
make modules
make modules_install
Proceeding to copy /lib/modules/2.6.22.5 to /mnt/lib/modules/2.6.22.5

And I always try making an initrd image when it fails using
Code:
mkinitramfs -r /mnt -o initrd.img
and putting it in /mnt/boot

What I'm doing feels wrong. Point me in the right direction please.

Thank you.

Hello, an empty partition is pretty useless when you want to install a kernel. To set up a minimal Linux-System you will have to be very! familiar with the boot-process. If you need further help, please explain what you intend to do with the System (along with some information about the host-system).
