Thumbs up Makefile ifeq not working

I have a Makefile

ifeq("rat",$CAT )
echo "not a cat" ;


is not working .it gives an eero message "Missing seperator 1". second line is one tab right . waht could be the problem

Try a space between "ifeq" and your left parenthesis.

it is not working

i tried to use if function ...then also it fails ,like below .

$(if( $cat) ,echo "cat" , \
$(if($gone) , echo "gone" ,) ,)

all these line are written in a file called and is included in Makefile

**********Makefile ***************
include ""

I dont know wher could be the problem , please guide me .
