make install -vs- make then make install

Being relatively new to Linux is there a difference between issuing a "make", letting that process finish then issuing "make install"? I just use "make install" and skip the "make". Will this cause a problem?

make will make a make file

lol whoops.

make install uses this makefile, so if there is already one in that folder then you dont need to make, i guess.. but u probably always should

Question

I thought make uses a make file to compile a bunch of sources. And make install puts the binaries in place so you can run the program easily.

Can someone clarify?

make _uses_ the makefile, not creates it.
