Smile make hangs or errors on Red Hat 5 Client

Forgive maybe this obvious question as Im fairly new to Linux particulary Red Hat

Im trying to 'make' a new module to load into kernel

I have an issue with my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro Laptop where I cant get the Intel Pro 2200 BG interface to be recognized.

As well documented on the web, This is due to a button on the side of the laptop which toggles the radio wireless off and on

So I have downloaded various fsam7400 version to attempt to create a kernel module ( )

The problem is when i type 'make' the system never creates module or I get an error like
fsam744make -C /lib/modules/2.6.18-53.1.14.el5/build SUBDIRS=/tmp/fsam7440-0.4 modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.18-53.1.14.el5/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [default] Error 2

the issue seems to be a missing directory

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 48 Mar 24 21:11 build -> ../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-53.1.14.el5-i686
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Mar 24 21:11 source -> build

build links to an invalid directory

Would someone kindly put me out of my misery and explain how I need to enable the make command to do something

Any help will be greatly appreciated

In order to compile a kernel module, you need to have the kernel source code installed.

I found from another forum that not all my Kernel rpms had been installed

I needed kernel-devel to be added manually for make to work

rpm -qa|grep kernel

kernel-devel-2.6.18-53.1.14.el5 <<<<<<<

this created a 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5-i686 directory under /usr/src/kernels

Now my 'make' runs propely

Many Thanks
