major noob install problem
I have been trying to setup my wireless and have downloaded kwifiselector-0.8-SuSE_10.1.i586.rpm, which installs without a problem but i cant find out how to start the program. ive also downloaded kwifiselector-0.8-SuSE_10.1.src.rpm which intalls fine but i still cant find out how to start the application. I also tried the tar.gz version, extracted it, navigated to it in the terminal, used ./configure but it gives the error
686-pc-linux' not recognized configure: error: /bin/sh admin/config.sub i686-pc-linux- failed i think this may be to do with not having a 64bit processor though. im running suse linux 10.1 many thanks!! |
well it may be that theres a new entry hidden away somewhere in your menu. Or maybe it's just a case of opening a terminal window and just typing kwifiselector and hitting enter.
the menu entry might be that kwifiselector suggests that it's a kde app and you're using gnome - lots of the apps work fine between the different desktops, but last time I tried gnome some of the kde apps didn't want to play. though SuSE default desktop used to be kde so I'm guessing. regards John |
I'm surprised that a distro like SUSE 10.1 would not have the wireless tools in the base install. I was impressed recently how Kubuntu installed on my laptop and EVERYTHING worked right out of the box.
My experience with Distros using APT/Synaptic and KDE is that anything installed using the package manager instantly goes into a menu somewhere. Try also: find / -name kwifiselector OR man kwifiselector |
thanks that worked great! but im having problems with kwifi selector saying no divice under adaptor. even though it is detected in yast.
so i have decided to install wireless-tools, i found a .rpm for it and it installs with no problems, though i cant find the shortcut to it again? ive tried wireless-tools and wirelesstools in the terminal window but that doesnt work?? |

sorry I can't help any more. regards John |
ndiswrapper
I have a USB wlan card that needed to use windows drivers to work. ndiswrapper does the job.
check out the ndiswrapper sourceforge page, this should tell you how to install/configure it. it has been pre-installed on several distros I have tried, and just needed configuration. good luck, Josh |
