Maillog file not being generated

Hi
Yesterday I had my /var and / full.
I saw the /var/log/maillog and /tmp/maillog was very big and cleared the /var/log/maillog, /var/log/messages and /tmp/maillog by cat>/var/log/maillog,cat>/var/log/messages,cat>tmp/maillog
Thereafter the pation size came ok but nothing is being written to /var/log/maillog or /var/log/messages or /tmp/maillog file.
What should be done.

Sanjib gupta
